We tell the history of Simrishamn and its villages through exhibitions, programmes and the museum magazine Garvaren. The museum is open all year round and there is free admission to all exhibitions.
Travel back in time in our play and learn rooms. Here you will find a shop and a boat to play in, a craft workshop, and animated films about the herring and the eel with their stories. For those who want, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and ice cream are available to buy.
Short films with a sea theme are shown here. Watch the film about Sigrid Björkegren, shipowner and in her day one of Simrishamn's most important employers, or the film about four generations of sailors from Österlen and how the sea shaped their destinies.
The exhibition reflects its 900-year history from many different perspectives - as a herring town, merchant town and tourist town. In the exhibition room on the second floor, the town is spread out between the countryside to the west and the sea to the east. Here you can meet the town's inhabitants and learn more about events and development through objects, texts and films. The themes depicted are Fishing and Shipping, Church and Power, War and Disasters, Trade and Merchants, Children and Young People, Crafts and Industry, Entertainment and Tourism. The time perspective is the 1100s to the 1900s.
Together with illustrator Jenny Hargne, we have created a children's trail for the exhibition Simrishamn 900 years. The children follow the cat-inspired characters Nim and Nälla through the exhibition. Nim has patience and likes to tell stories. Nälla likes mischief and has dressed up as a seagull. Through illustrations, short texts, crafts and puzzles, children are encouraged to take part in the exhibition and discover the history of Simrishamn. The aim is to stimulate curiosity and the desire to learn. The target group is children aged 4 - 10.

Österlen Museum has restored the old Björkegren shipping office to how it likely looked in the 1880s during the time of shipowner Johan Daniel Björkegren. Shipping operations began as early as the late 1830s with small-vessel trading along the coasts of the Baltic Sea. The business eventually expanded towards Europe and further across the Atlantic to South and North America. The restoration of the shipping office has been carried out in collaboration with the Herrlin Foundation and the Gamla Cimbrishamn association, with a grant from the Swedish National Heritage Board. The shipping office is open to visitors upon request; please inform the staff in the museum shop.
