Culture and nature.
Tranås by was the original name of the village and is said to mean an isthmus where cranes nest. The name is recorded in writing as Traanaes as early as 1387, but finds of remains show that people lived here much earlier, probably as early as the 10th century. The Royal Swedish Post Office noted that there was a place in Småland that could be confused with Tranås on Österlen and decided that Skåne Tranås should become Skåne Tranås.
Skåne Tranås is consolidating its position as a place where quality of life and food culture are cultivated. A very good restaurant, a chocolate shop with its own production and a hostel with a wide range of courses in specialities as diverse as willow plaiting and eagle watching make the village well visited, even though only around 300 people live there today.
The village youth association, which is extremely lively, nevertheless has 300 members.
In the village there is a carpentry factory, nursing home, well drilling, dog boarding centre, handicraft shop, etc. Onslunda or Tomelilla offering schools and other services.
It is 9 kilometres to Tomelilla where there is a travel centre from which you can take both bus and train. Skånetrafiken's trains operate on the Malmö-Simrishamn via Ystad daily in both directions.
Skåneexpressen, the bus between Kristianstad and Ystad, runs through Skåne Tranås. A regional bus to Tomelilla are also available. If you want to fly, it's just under six miles to Sturup and 11 miles to Kastrup.
