Building with clay has many advantages. They require small amounts of energy because these natural and unprocessed materials are available in many places and can be delivered without long-distance transport. The materials are cheap and even a gift from nature, free of toxins. Clay plastered houses have an even humidity level because the clay can buffer moisture, and the plaster actually makes the houses more fireproof than conventional houses
Clay is a fantastic material, it sticks to most things, moderates humidity and removes hazardous substances from the air, is easy to reuse and can be moulded into almost any shape. Clay is also part of the Swedish (Scanian) building tradition. Clay as a building material is non-toxic, climate-friendly, encourages experimentation and is easy to reuse.
In 2017, the course leader Markus led a course in Stamped Earth House at Ecotopia. This is how the environmental cottage came into being, which countless visitors have both admired and used.
This course, with its wide range of indoor clay techniques, is aimed at both keen self-builders and professional craftsmen.
The course is based on practical work experience and includes several workshops where we plaster clay walls with different finishing techniques and build clay floors with an insight into the existing clay layer and its finishing.
